Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) involves damage to the brain, which occurs after birth and is not related to a congenital (present from birth) or a degenerative (gradually deteriorating) disease such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease. These impairments may be temporary or permanent and cause partial or functional disability. It is also important to note that acquired brain injury can be caused by both, traumatic as well as non-traumatic events. Thus, the two terms acquired and traumatic brain injury should not be used interchangeably, but instead, TBI should be regarded as a subcategory of acquired brain injury
